Missionary Moment 3: Great Things

Hello again! This week was very special. On Tuesday, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles came to speak with us. It was an extremely powerful experience. His talk related the importance of our work today, and that of the early saints, specifically the translation of the Book of Mormon. As he spoke to all of us missionaries, there were two phrases that stood out to me. The first was “[God] expects great things of us”, and compared our work to that of translating the Book of Mormon. Our work is hard. Whether we are on missions or at home, life will always be difficult, and we will always have a work to do. Part of what hit me with this quote was that he said “expects”. God doesn’t merely “want” or “hope” that we will be great, but is so set on it that He EXPECTS it of us. This isn’t meant to be intimidating or discouraging, in fact, I’d go as far as to say that this should encourage us. This is because of a simple truth Elder Christofferson shared a little later on, “We are His”.
Think about that for a second. We are all children of a loving Heavenly Father and we are doing His work here on the earth today. He is just as quick to expect great things of us as He is to rush to our aid when we need Him. Isn’t that amazing?
I know that God truly does expect us to be great and will help us to be so. I know that God has called prophets and apostles to guide His church in these days. I know the Book of Mormon to be from God and to be a major blessing in our lives as we study it daily.
Just keep on keepin’ on! See ya next week!
